GLOW started in 2007, when the Central California Conference (CCC) raised a fund for evangelism. Jerry Page, then CCC president, commissioned his Publishing Ministries Department to develop a literature program for all members. Nelson Ernst (back then Publishing Ministries Assistant Director, at that time 22 years old) developed the idea of GLOW, based on Ellen White’s messages. She wrote: “There are many places in which the voice of the minister cannot be heard, places which can be reached only by our publications,—the books, papers, and tracts filled with the Bible truths that the people need.”—Colporteur Ministry, 4. Since 2015 the GLOW project is endorsed by the General Conference and by now more than 65 million tracts have been printed in several languages.
How does GLOW work? Here are 7 simple steps:
- Read the tract
- Pray and share the tract
- They read the tract
- They call, write, or e-mail
- Church gets the contact info
- Church members follow up
- Many times baptisms were the result of this.
The purpose of GLOW is evange-living—church members carrying tracts with them wherever they go and sharing it when they have an opportunity. For example, a young Adventist girl was travelling by bus, when she had an overwhelming conviction to give a tract to a stranger sitting next to her. She was very nervous, but at last before the bus stopped she gave a tract—with the title: Does God care that I’m hurting?—to the man sitting next to her. He looked in her eyes and said: You know what, I was just asking God to give me a sign if He doesn’t want me to commit suicide, and I think this is it.
Besides providing tracts for church members, GLOW organizes trainings for churches, and several outreach activities, such as GLOW mission trips. At the mission trips GLOW has certain goals; for example giving out 1 million tracts (a goal which was reached both in Philadelphia during the Papal visit and during the Super Bowl), or reaching areas where there is no Adventist presence yet.
Plans & To Prospective Participants
In Europe there are several countries where GLOW is already present, having church trainings, outreach activities, providing resources. You can check if GLOW tracts are available in your language at www.glowonline.org. If not, and you are interested in having GLOW in your language, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
GLOW has special plans for Europe. In 2017 the Total Member Involvement project of the GC will have big evangelistic campaigns and outreach activities coming up in Romania. To support this effort, GLOW is planning to have a mission trip in Romania early in 2017 (possibly at the end of January/beginning of February). Our goal is to distribute one million tracts and you can help! Don’t miss it!
More than a thousand will soon be converted in one day, most of whom will trace their first convictions to the reading of our publications.—Ellen White, Review and Herald, Nov 10, 1885.
